Let’s all take a moment and be thankful that Black Widows don’t FLY!
Many of us have an innate sense of arachnophobia when we come in contact with spiders. The black widow seems to evoke the most terrifying response though. There is something sinister about its long, spindle-like legs and red markings on its belly. We have seen videos of spiders, particularly black widows, eating their mates, we have seen the movie ‘The Fly,’ and quite frankly spiders can come off as quite terrifying
In the Southwest, there are a variety of black widow species, and all of them are venomous. Black widow venom is 15 times more toxic than rattlesnake venom. Generally, female black widows are black with a reddish hourglass marking on their abdomens. The adult males are not venomous, and they are smaller than the females. Black Widows are the most venomous spider located in the U.S.; however, people generally don’t die from their bites because the spiders usually inject very small amounts of venom. The females usually spend most of their time hanging upside down on their chaotic-looking webs. Female black widows lay up to 750 eggs several times throughout the summer. Up to 9 egg sacs can be produced in a single summer. Generally, only a handful of spiderlings survive hatching because their siblings prey on each other.
Most of the time black widows seek out dark places such as sheds, woodpiles, or another place that allow their webs to be constructed close to the ground. To avoid black widows from making their home in your yard it is best to keep landscaping clear of debris such as wood and to keep areas clean. Because black widows enjoy feasting upon crickets, roaches, and other pests, it is important to keep these insects under control with pest control if they are spotted regularly on your property. Cold weather and drought tend to cause these spiders to seek refuge indoors. Because black widows are venomous and can cause a reaction when one has been bitten, it’s important to treat these spiders with respect. To eradicate these local pests, it is important to contact your local Pest Control company for safe and effective removal.
Black Widows are black and glossy spiders that have bright, red-orange marks under their bellies. Females get up to 1 and 1/2 inches when legs are extended and are usually shy BUT aggressively attack after laying or guarding their eggs. Black Widow spiders get their name from the belief that the female eats the male after mating! Males also have the red marking on their bellies, but they’re light tan, and SMALLER. Black Widow spiders spread a few days after they’ve hatched! These “Instar Spiderling Black Widows” climb to a high point with an air current. They spin little balloon webs to float out on the breeze to find a home of their own.
Black Widow Bite Signs & Symptoms
Black Widow venom is a Neurotoxin, & there is an anti-venom available. {If possible take the spider for identification.} Black Widow Spider bites are rarely fatal when treated.
