How to Identify Bedbugs

Size

Adult Bed Bugs are 1/4 inch long. Nymphs range in size between 1.3 mm to 4 or 5 mm.

Shape

Before Bed Bugs feed: they are flat, broad and oval in shape. After feeding, Bedbugs are swollen, and have an elongated shape.

Color

Nymph Bed Bugs are almost colorless. Before an adult bed bug feeds it is mahogany in color. After feeding, adult bed bugs are a reddish brown color.

Legs

Bed Bugs have 6 legs.

Antennae

Bed bugs are usually nocturnal eaters, feeding when residents are sleeping, BUT bed bugs will adjust their schedule to the sleeping hosts habits.

If the host (victim) moves to another room, bedbugs will FOLLOW them to the new room!
During the day bed bugs hide in cracks & crevices close to the host. (examples: mattress seams, BOX SPRINGS, bed frames, headboard, baseboards, furniture, night stand, etc.)
It takes a bed bugs 5 – 10 minutes for a full blood meal.
Bed Bugs spread EASILY, and have been found spreading through Library Books!
Bed Bugs can LIVE for several MONTHS with OUT a blood meal.
Bed Bugs are attracted to the Carbon Dioxide we breath out at night!

How Do You Get Bedbugs?

Bed bugs can be brought into a home on infested furniture, or visitors.
They can come from luggage or personal belongings after staying in infested lodging areas, or using public transportation.
In apartment homes, townhouses, or hotels, and other connected homes bed bugs will move from one infested home into others through wiring, plumbing, and shared walls.

Bed Bugs can crawl up to four feet per minute!

Signs of Bed Bug Problems

Waking up with red, itchy bug bites.
Patterns of 3 bites in a row.

Bedbug Sources

There are several sources of bedbug infestations including:

Used Furniture & Items

This is a very common source of bed bugs! Don’t buy refurbished mattresses or couches. If you buy new furniture, pick it up. Furniture delivery trucks also take away used furniture, and can have bed bugs in them. Don’t rent furniture. Don’t store other people’s furniture at your home. If you help someone move and have other people’s things in your car, inspect your car after their things are gone. Inspect all garage sale furniture or antique store furniture first, and thoroughly clean. Inspect all used books, and things, before you buy them. If you shop at a thrift store, put items right into the washer and dryer when you get home!

Travel

Check for: Bed Bugs (similar in size and shape to a tick but they have a rusty reddish color), Bed bug spots (several little black spots in a group), and Bed Bugs eggs (look like little tiny pieces of rice).

Pull all bedding back.
Look under the mattress tag.
Look in the side seams of the mattress.
Check the box springs.
Inspect the back side of the headboard.
If you find bed bugs or their fecal sign, report it to management, and get another room.

Other Bedbug Sources

Friends and relatives that you’ve visited or who’ve come to stay.
Fellow work associates can bring them to the office.
Public Places and Transportation especially where seats are upholstered.

DON”T BRING BEDBUGS HOME when you travel:

When packing to travel use a soft bag (like a duffel bag or backpack) to pack instead of hard luggage. (You can put this in the dries when you get home)
Inspect the luggage stand provided, and use it for your luggage instead of a bed or floor.
Keep you things in your luggage, don’t use the furniture provided.
Inspect the closet for bedbugs.
Do not put your shoes or anything under the bed.
When you get home, unpack in a laundry room and launder (at least run through the dryer) everything immediately.
Inspect all your luggage and things for bedbugs upon returning home.

If you think you picked up bed bugs in your luggage: Put it in a sealed plastic bag with a fumigation strip, or put the sealed plastic bag in the HOT sun for a few days, or put it in the dryer.
