Where Scorpions Live
There are at least 1,300 different species of scorpions throughout the world, and about 90 of them live in the US. Most scorpions live in the west… Only 5 out of 90 scorpion species naturally live EAST of the Mississippi.
Scorpions live on ALL the continents except for Antarctica! They’re much higher in number throughout the desert and semi desert climates. Scorpions also live in tropical and subtropical areas, savannas, rain forests, grasslands, at high elevations like in the Alps, Himalayas, and the Andes mountains.
Out of 1,300 scorpions in the world… ONLY 25 species are dangerous. ONLY ONE scorpion species in the US is potentially life threatening – The Arizona Bark Scorpion.
During the day scorpions prefer to reside: under tree bark, stones and logs, in concrete or rock crevices, inside concrete expansion joints, around the foundation of homes, and inside wall voids. Scorpions also favor burrows. A Hadrurus scorpion was discovered TWENTY FEET below the surface in an arroyo! (Arroyos, common to the south-west, are small water- ways that have steep sides and a flat floor. They’re usually dry except for after heavy rains.)
