Subterranean Termites
Most termites found in our Phoenix AZ desert, are Subterranean Termites that live in vast colonies that are deep under the ground. Subterranean Termites come through mud like tubes, that they build, in search of cellulose {contained in the wood products homes are built with} to feed on.
Phoenix’s native termite species is Heterotermes. These native subterranean Termites flourish in our dry desert climate. They usually swarm during or after Monsoon season, and after heavy rains. This termites species builds “Mud Tubes” that are SMALL, strong, and air tight! Subterranean Termites like to nest in areas with more moisture, and under concrete foundations. Because these Termites are so small, they can invade homes through very SMALL cracks in concrete slabs and expansion joints! Homeowners often call us for Termite Control when they find these mud like tubes going up a foundation wall, poking through an interior wall, or when they see flying termites “swarming” around their home or yard.
